Deine Tomate Indigo Pear Drops
So startest du
Indigo Pear Drops kennenlernen

- Keimtemperatur
- 20–25 °C
- Keimdauer
- 7–14 Tage
- Saattiefe
- ca. 0,5 cm

Vereinzeln: jede Pflanze bekommt Platz

Your Indigo Pear Drops tomato
Small pear-shaped tomatoes with a yellow-orange base and dark purple shoulders: grow Indigo Pear Drops from seed to sweet snack fruit, one step at a time.
Getting started
- Prepare clean pots with drainage holes, fine seed compost, labels, a watering rose and a bright, warm place. Moisten the compost first: it should feel damp, without dripping.
- Sow indoors about 6–8 weeks before you plan to plant out. March to early April is usually suitable in Central Europe; greenhouse crops may start earlier. Sow 1–2 seeds per pot and cover with about 0.5 cm of compost.
- Keep the compost lightly moist at about 20–25 °C. You may use a clear cover, ventilating it daily. Seedlings usually emerge in 7–14 days; cool compost delays germination.
- Remove the cover once seedlings emerge. Immediately give them plenty of light, at about 18–20 °C. Water gently and allow excess water to drain.
Months are guidance for Central Europe. Local frost risk, warmth and light matter more than dates or your chosen language. Germination ranges are general tomato guidance, not a guarantee for every seed lot.
Meet Indigo Pear Drops
Indigo Pear Drops (Solanum lycopersicum) is an indeterminate cherry tomato: it continues growing and needs support. Its small pear-shaped fruit tastes sweet. Sun-exposed skin develops purple anthocyanins, natural plant pigments. Less dark areas turn yellow to orange at maturity, with yellow-orange flesh. Plant height and fruit size vary with growing conditions.
The variety comes from Oregon State University’s breeding programme in Corvallis, USA. The recorded cross between Yellow Cherry and P20-7 was made in 2005, followed by selection over several generations. US records give 23 May 2014 as the first sale. This is a modern cultivar, rather than a centuries-old landrace.

- Germination temperature
- 20–25 °C
- Germination time
- 7–14 days
- Sowing depth
- about 0.5 cm
- Plant spacing
- 60–90 cm
Pricking out: give each seedling room
After the first two narrow seed leaves, serrated true leaves appear. When there are one or two true leaves, move each seedling into its own pot about 8–10 cm wide. Lift the roots with compost using a spoon; hold the seedling by a leaf, never its stem. Plant slightly deeper without burying leaves, then water.
Hardening off and planting out
Hardening off means gradually getting plants used to sun, wind and cooler air. Start about two weeks before planting, with a few hours in sheltered partial shade. Gradually increase time outside and direct sun; bring plants in during cold conditions. Plant out only after frost risk has passed in settled mild weather. Fit a support immediately, plant just below the lowest remaining leaves and water thoroughly.
Direct sowing: only in long warm seasons
Indoor sowing is more reliable in Central Europe; direct sowing is usually unsuitable for beginners there. In very warm regions with a long frost-free season, you can sow outside after the final frost once soil is about 20 °C. Sow 2–3 seeds per station, about 0.5 cm deep, keep moist and later retain the strongest seedling. Harvest starts later than with indoor-raised plants.
Containers and spacing
Practical recommendation: one plant per stable 25–30 litre container of vegetable compost, with clear drainage holes. Larger pots dry out more slowly. Empty standing water from saucers. Leave 60–90 cm between plants in the ground, using more space for multiple stems. Keep enough room between rows for watering and harvesting.
Watering & careIndigo Pear Drops · Solanum lycopersicum
Water consistently
Check the top few centimetres with a finger. When the surface is dry and the compost below only slightly moist, water slowly at the base to wet the root zone. Avoid permanently wet compost and alternating drought with flooding. Check pots daily in hot weather and keep leaves as dry as possible.
Feed according to need
Use fertile, free-draining compost. Pre-fertilised compost already contains nutrients: check how long its feed lasts. Review feeding when fruit starts forming and use tomato fertiliser according to the label if needed. More feed does not mean more fruit; excess nitrogen mainly encourages leaves.
Tying in and removing side shoots
Tie the main stem loosely to a cane or string. For easy management, we recommend one or two main stems. Side shoots grow in the angle between a leaf stalk and the main stem; removing these small shoots is called pinching out. For two stems, retain one strong side shoot and support it too. Keep flower trusses and avoid stripping healthy leaves.
Air, flowers and heat
Tomatoes are self-fertile; wind and insects help move pollen. In a greenhouse, gently tap flowering trusses occasionally. Ventilate daily, prevent overheating and allow air between plants. Temporary shade can help during extreme heat; extra sun is not always beneficial.
Harvesting & eatingIndigo Pear Drops · Solanum lycopersicum
Yellow-orange and slightly yielding
Do not harvest solely because the shoulders are black: they may darken before the fruit is ripe. The base colour should change from green to yellow-orange, especially underneath. Ripe fruit yields slightly to very gentle pressure. Dark shoulders can remain; less purple colouring in shade is not a ripening defect.
Pick gently and regularly
Twist ripe fruit off gently or cut its short stalk with clean scissors. Do not pull on the whole truss. The start of harvest depends on sowing, planting and weather; in Central Europe it is usually summer until frost. Leave hard green fruit to ripen. Do not eat leaves or stems, and do not snack on unripe tomatoes.
Flavour and uses
These small sweet tomatoes suit snacking, salads, skewers, bruschetta and colourful garnishes. Wash before eating. For a quick salad, halve them and mix with basil, olive oil and a little salt. Flavour varies with ripeness, sunshine and watering.
Storage and surplus
Keep whole, undamaged ripe fruit briefly in an airy place out of direct sun and eat soon. Cover cut tomatoes, refrigerate and use promptly. Turn surplus into sauce or freeze in portions; thawed tomatoes are better suited to cooking.
Where can you grow it?
Windowsill
Suitable for raising seedlings if very bright. An ordinary windowsill rarely suits a mature plant: this variety needs plenty of light, root space and support.
Balcony and patio
Choose a warm, sunny, sheltered position. Secure the container and support against toppling. A rain roof helps if its sides remain open for ventilation.
Garden and greenhouse
Choose sun, fertile free-draining soil and good air movement. A ventilated greenhouse extends the season; outdoors, an open-sided roof reduces wet foliage.
If things go wrong
No germination?
Check compost temperature rather than room temperature alone. Keep it lightly moist, never waterlogged. 7–14 days is a guide; cool compost slows germination. If delayed further, review seed and conditions.
Long, thin seedlings?
Usually too little light combined with excess warmth. Give more light and slightly cooler conditions after germination. Very early sowing often needs a grow light.
Dark but hard fruit?
Purple is not a reliable sign of ripeness. Wait for yellow-orange base colour and a little softness; do not judge by the dark shoulders alone.
Flowers dropping?
Heat, cool spells and irregular watering can interfere with fruit set. Ventilate, keep moisture consistent and review growing conditions.
Split fruit or dark patches underneath?
Splitting often follows large moisture swings. A sunken patch opposite the stalk may be blossom-end rot: impaired calcium movement, often linked to water stress. Stabilise watering rather than adding lime or feed without a reason.
Brown leaf patches?
Keep foliage dry and improve airflow. Remove clearly diseased leaves using clean tools. Rapidly spreading symptoms need expert diagnosis; guaranteed disease resistance of this seed lot has not been established.

Jouw tomaat Indigo Pear Drops

Gebruik voedzame, goed doorlatende grond.
Barsten of donkere plekken onderaan?

Tu tomate Indigo Pear Drops
Conoce Indigo Pear Drops

Riego y cuidadosIndigo Pear Drops · Solanum lycopersicum
Entutorar y quitar brotes laterales
Cosecha y cocinaIndigo Pear Drops · Solanum lycopersicum
Amarillo anaranjado y algo blando
¿No germina nada?
Suele faltar luz y sobrar calor.

Come iniziare
Bagna delicatamente e lascia scolare l’acqua in eccesso.

Acqua e curaIndigo Pear Drops · Solanum lycopersicum
Usa terreno fertile e drenante.
In serra puoi toccare delicatamente ogni tanto i grappoli in fiore. Arieggia ogni giorno, evita surriscaldamento e mantieni spazio.
Raccolta e cucinaIndigo Pear Drops · Solanum lycopersicum
Giallo-arancio e leggermente morbido
Lascia maturare i frutti verdi e duri. Non mangiare foglie o fusti e non usare i pomodori immaturi come spuntino.
Sapore e cucina
Copri quelli tagliati, mettili in frigorifero e usali rapidamente.
Orto e serra
Sole, terreno fertile drenante e buona circolazione d’aria.
Piantine lunghe e sottili?
Spesso poca luce e troppo caldo.
Cadono i fiori?
Macchie brune sulle foglie?
Tieni asciutto il fogliame e migliora l’aria.
